Preparing for your First Massage Appointment

Here at Great Turning Healing Center we are happy to accept new patients.

We’re so glad you’ve chosen to invest in your wellness. Whether you’re seeking relief, relaxation, or enhanced performance, we’re here to ensure your experience is comfortable, effective, and tailored just for you. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your first session.

Our mission is to provide quality care to our patients, and we are happy to help you in any way we can.

Before Your Appointment

A little preparation helps you get the most out of your time on the table.

Intake Form: Please complete your digital intake form at least 24 hours before your appointment. This helps your therapist understand your health history, goals, and any areas of focus.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to your massage. This helps your muscles be more receptive and supports the body’s natural detoxification process.

Meals: Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session. A light snack an hour or so prior is perfect.

Communication is Key: Think about your goals. Are you here for deep muscle relief, stress management, injury recovery, or general maintenance? Knowing what you want to achieve helps us customize your session.

Arrival & Check-In

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to settle in, use the restroom, and begin relaxing. This ensures you receive your full session time.

You’ll be greeted in our tranquil waiting area. Your therapist will then guide you to a private treatment room for a brief consultation.

The Consultation

This is the most important part of your first visit. Your therapist will:

Review your intake form and health history.

Discuss your primary goals, areas of tension or pain, and any specific concerns.

Explain the planned approach and the modalities that might be best for you.

Answer any questions you have. No question is too small!

During Your Massage

Your comfort and privacy are our top priorities.

Undressing to Your Comfort Level: Your therapist will leave the room to allow you to undress in private. You should only undress to your personal comfort level. Many clients choose to undress completely, while others keep underwear on. You will always be securely draped with a sheet and blanket—only the area being worked on will be exposed.

Communication During the Session: This is your time. Please speak up about:

Pressure: Want more or less? Just say so. Our goal is "working pressure," not pain.

Temperature: Are you too warm or cool?

Discomfort: Any pinching, numbness, or sudden pain?

Focus Areas: "Could we spend more time on my right shoulder?"

Relax and Breathe: Try to let go, breathe deeply, and allow your mind to quiet. This mental release significantly enhances the physical benefits.

After Your Session

Your therapist will leave the room so you can dress slowly and reorient.

They will meet you outside the room with a glass of water and may offer some brief aftercare recommendations, such as stretches or hydration tips.

Plan for Relaxation: If possible, avoid scheduling strenuous activities immediately after your massage. Allow your body to integrate the work. You may feel deeply relaxed, energized, or a bit sore (like after a good workout)—all are normal reactions.

Hydrate: Continue drinking water throughout the day to flush toxins and keep muscles supple.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: Do I have to talk during my massage?
A: Not at all! Some clients enjoy quiet conversation, while others prefer silence for meditation. We follow your lead. Your therapist will check in periodically about pressure, but otherwise, it’s your time to zone out.

Q: What if I fall asleep or snore?
A: It’s a compliment! It means you’re deeply relaxed. It happens all the time.

Q: What should I do if I feel self-conscious about my body?
A: Please know that massage therapists are professionals focused on musculature and structure. We provide a judgment-free space for all bodies to heal. Our sole focus is on your well-being.

Q: How often should I get a massage?
A: It depends entirely on your goals. For injury recovery or chronic issues, weekly or bi-weekly sessions might be ideal initially. For stress management and maintenance, every 3-6 weeks is common. Your therapist can help you create a plan.
